Computer Aided Instruction (CAI) Tutorials

I recently created some tutorials and a quiz (based on the tutorials) on the topic of Computer Aided Instruction. These tutorials are intended for instructors, teaching assistants, and instructional technology students that might be thinking about creating CAI tutorials of their own to improve teaching and learning. The links for the tutorials and the quiz are listed below. It is recommended that you proceed through the tutorials and the quiz in the suggested order. The tutorials were created using Articulate Engage and the quiz using Articulate Quizmaker.

Podcasting Workshop at USF

On November 27, 2007, the Center for 21st Century Teaching Excellence (C21TE) along with the Florida Center for Instructional Technology (FCIT), the Tampa Campus Library (LIB), and Academic Computing (ACOMP) will present a workshop on Podcasting for faculty at the University of South Florida (USF).

The workshop, titled “Overview of Podcasting-related Technologies at USF” will be conducted in the TECO Room of the College of Education, from 9 am to noon.

This session is open to faculty and staff, and it will include examples of the use of Podcasting (including iTunes U) presented by USF faculty, as well as information about the use of Podcasting-related technologies. On hand will be experienced podcast developers and supporters from the College of Education’s Florida Center for Instructional Technology, the Center for 21st Century Teaching Excellence, USF Libraries, and Academic Computing. Other topics include methods for delving into the rich repository of ready-made podcasts for use in teaching and information on creating podcasts. Handouts will be provided and plans for more detailed follow-up support for teaching with Podcasting will be discussed.

Please reserve a space by registering in advance: email Dawn Christian at christian@cte.usf.edu. If you have questions unrelated to registration, please email Diane Williams, dwilliams@cte.usf.edu.

Blog Objectives (blogjectives?)

I have finally managed to work this blog and podcasting project into my schedule at work. I am a faculty developer and instructional designer at the Center for 21st Century Teaching Excellence at the University of South Florida.

I plan to update this blog periodically with information related to instructional design and technology and its use to enhance instruction and student learning. This information will be presented via text on this blog and/or via podcasts. While this blog and the podcasts may be of special interest to instructors in higher education institutions, it will also be relevant to instructors in any field of learning.

The kind of information I plan to post includes:

  1. New developments in the field of instructional design and technology
  2. Quick and focused software and hardware tutorials
  3. Tips and tricks on using relevant software and hardware
  4. Introductions to relevant instructional software and hardware
  5. Innovative insights into and the application of existing technology to enhance instruction and learning
  6. Personal experiences with relevant instructional technology
  7. Links to external resources relevant to instructional technology

I hope that you enjoy reading my blog and that you return to check for updates and new podcast episodes.

Wikis, Blogs, and Podcasts: Workshop Updates

This post is intended for those that attended our last workshop titled: “Using Wikis, Blogs, and Podcasting to Enhance Teaching and Learning” [http://www.cte.usf.edu/workshops/#wikipod].

Thumbs Up!
Good News:
Before this workshop, we were assured by USF Blog administrators that all USF faculty and students could have their own USF Blog Space. However, during the workshop some faculty were unable to create a USF Blog even though they had a USF netID. I inquired with USF Blog Admins, they investigated the issue, and came up with the following resolution:

The server that houses the blogs is primarily the student web and email server, so accounts are not automatically generated for faculty. Faculty will first have to get a mail.usf.edu account and then activate their USF Blog Space (see attachments below for directions). To get a mail.usf.edu account, faculty will need to send the following info to usg@mailman.acomp.usf.edu –

– Full name
– Affliation with USF (student, staff, faculty, etc)
– NetID
– USF Email Address

So this is great news! Send out the email at your earliest convenience so that you can start blogging and podcasting.

Podcasting Podcast

This is a podcast I have decided to host on the topic of podcasting. You could call it a meta-podcast.

In this current (first) podcast, I discuss the origins of podcasting and some of the underlying technologies that enable podcasting.

My first podcast session link is listed below. If you like my podcasts, you can request earlier sessions by emailing me at: neilgomes@mail.com or posting a comment to this post. Podcasts will be updated on a monthly basis.

Please note that these podcasts are copyright protected. You are most welcome to link to them and listen to them for free, but please do not claim them to be your own :-)

Thank you. Enjoy!

You could simply download the mp3 file, but I would encourage you to add my podcast to your mp3 music player or RSS list aggregator. My podcast’s RSS link is: http://ndg.blog.usf.edu/wp-rss2.php
